Planning the desert trip

Best time for the desert

The season matters less for the dunes than for the night in the tent. That is where the camp option comes in.

The tours run all year, and the route looks much the same in every month. What changes is the night. In winter the tent gets cold and the camp option decides between a night under blankets and a heated tent; in summer the tent stays warm long after sunset. Spring and autumn sit between the two, which is why most travellers aim for them.

Winter nights in the camp

MOROCCO TRIP writes that desert nights in winter drop to 0 to 5 °C. Its standard tents come with blankets and no heating, its luxury tents are heated. Marrakech City Life promises warm blankets in winter and, on its tour to Fes, asks guests to bring warm clothes for the evenings. Most other listings say nothing about heating in either class. The night in the dunes is the coldest part of the trip. Which listings sell a heated tent is on standard or luxury camp.

Summer in the desert

Summer reviewers describe hot nights rather than cold ones: in August the tent barely cools down, and even in early September one guest found it too hot to sleep. The heat also reaches into the van, where reviewers mention air conditioning that did not keep up on the long stretches. The rides into and out of the dunes happen at sunset and sunrise, the coolest hours of the day, so the camel ride itself is less of a problem than the night. 3t Travel is the one listing on this site that names air conditioning in a tent, on the luxury options of its two-day trip.

Spring and autumn

These are the months in between, when neither blankets nor air conditioning decide the night and the standard tent works for most people. A warm layer for the sunrise ride is still useful, because the camp is left before the sun is up. See what to pack.

New Year and Ramadan

Ando Travel lists a New Year’s Eve option with a festive night on its round trip and its tour to Fes, and a New Year’s Eve option on its four-day tour. Ramadan 2027 is expected from February to early March 2027; the exact dates depend on the moon sighting. None of the listings mentions a break during Ramadan. Lunch on the road falls into the fasting hours, so ask the operator how the restaurant stops work that month, and expect dinner in the camp after sunset as usual.

Travellers on desert weather

Most are from August to October 2026. Two travellers found the tent warm in late summer and one found the van’s air conditioning weak; others write about the luxury camp and four days in autumn.

“Overall an amazing experience with helpful and informative guides. The desert with camel ride was a particular hilight. Be aware though that the desert temperature in August does not drop noticeably overnight! It is possible that in the heat of August a different sort of trip is necessary but as …”

“It was well organized. Fun activities, good guides. The van was clean and comfortable. The only thing I didn't like was sleeping in tent in the desert. it was so hot at night. At autumn or spring must be better then early September I guess. Overall it was worth the price.”
