A one-way tour turns the desert into part of the route between Morocco’s two big medinas. You leave Marrakech in the morning, sleep near the Dades Valley or in Tinghir, ride into Erg Chebbi on the second evening and reach your hotel in Fes on the evening of day 3. For anyone heading on to Chefchaouen or Tangier, the drive back to Marrakech simply drops out of the plan.

Day 3 from Merzouga to Fes

After the sunrise ride the van drives north through Erfoud and the palm groves of the Ziz Valley, climbs into the Middle Atlas and crosses its cedar forests before Ifrane, a mountain town with sloping roofs. MOROCCO TRIP lists photo stops in Erfoud, the Ziz Valley, the cedar forest and Ifrane; Ando Travel names Midelt on the way. The listings give an arrival in Fes around 8 pm (MOROCCO TRIP) and around 7 pm (Ando Travel), at your hotel.

The first two days

Up to the dunes these tours follow the round trip: the Tizi n’Tichka pass, Ait Ben Haddou, the road of the kasbahs and the Todra Gorge. The first night differs by listing. MOROCCO TRIP stays in Tinghir, close to the gorge, Ando Travel near Kelaat M’Gouna and Marrakech City Life in the Dades Gorge. Pickup is at 7 am in Marrakech on the MOROCCO TRIP and Ando Travel tours; MOROCCO TRIP sends the details by WhatsApp and e-mail until 5 pm the day before.

Camp and extras

MOROCCO TRIP sells three classes on its Fes tour: standard, deluxe and a premium option. Only the premium option includes quad biking and the inside of the Atlas Studios in Ouarzazate; the other two see the studios from outside. The same listing offers a 4x4 transfer to the camp instead of the camel on request, and meals in vegetarian, vegan, halal or gluten-free versions. At Marrakech City Life quads and buggies are hired from locals on site, and the listing asks you to bring warm clothes for winter evenings and shoes for walking on sand. The camp classes across all three-day tours are compared on standard or luxury camp.

Other ways to end in Fes

The Marrakech City Life round trip lists an optional transfer from Merzouga to Fes or Agadir instead of the drive back. The two-day tour by 3t Travel has options that return to Fes, after a very early start from Marrakech. The four-day Ando Travel tour adds a second night in Merzouga, in a lodge with a private bathroom and a pool, and lets you choose Fes or Marrakech for the last day.

From Fes the blue town of Chefchaouen is the usual next stop, and Tangier with its ferries to Spain is further north. Our sister site Tangier & Chefchaouen compares day trips and transfers from Fes to Chefchaouen.

What travellers say on the way to Fes

Guests praise their guides and drivers, the luxury tent with its own bathroom and the stops along the long drive. One found the lunch stops hard to skip without the lunch option.

“Great excursion, I recommend it without a doubt. It is a lot of hours in the car, but it is worth it to see the different stops. Our driver Kamal belkhairi was excellent; he told us about everything we saw, gave us recommendations, and made sure we always felt comfortable in every way.”
Scarfo · Italy · September 2026 3 days to Fes · Ando Travel
“Latif was an amazing guide and made the experience unforgettable. He was genuinely invested in ensuring the trip went smoothly and went above and beyond for us and our group. 100% recommend. Ask for Latif!”
Octavio · United States · September 2026 3 days Marrakech to Fes · MOROCCO TRIP
“Highly recommend this trip, The Sahara experience is truly an incredible, pinch me moment. Definitely do the luxury camp, however be aware that luxury doesn’t apply to the first night accommodation which is extremely basic, and the mattresses are like …”
Rebecca · New Zealand · September 2026 3 days Marrakech to Fes, desert camp · Marrakech City Life
“Ajbeli (Mohammed) was a great guide and driver. He went beyond when a piece of luggage was left behind. Very friendly and professional. The desert was the highlight of the trip. Wish I had an extra day. I went with the Luxury package. It was nice to have my own tent, private bathroom and …”
Robert · Australia · September 2026 3 days to Fes · Ando Travel
“I booked the normal option without lunch. Lunch didn't really seem optional. At lunchtime, we stopped in the middle of nowhere at restaurants that specialize in serving coach groups (very run-down). There was no opportunity to get away from the group having lunch and just have a cup of tea or …”
Simon · Sri Lanka · October 2026 · translated review 3 days to Fes · Ando Travel
“It was well organized. Fun activities, good guides. The van was clean and comfortable. The only thing I didn't like was sleeping in tent in the desert. it was so hot at night. At autumn or spring must be better then early September I guess. Overall it was worth the price.”

FAQ

What time do desert tours arrive in Fes?

In the evening of day 3. MOROCCO TRIP gives around 8 pm, Ando Travel around 7 pm, both at your hotel. Traffic and stops can shift that, so plan nothing fixed for that evening.

Does ending in Fes cost more?

The tours to Fes are separate listings with their own prices, set by date and option. The four-day Ando Travel tour lets you pick Fes or Marrakech within the same listing.

Is the route to Fes longer than the drive back to Marrakech?

The listings give similar arrival times in the evening for both directions. The road to Fes crosses the Middle Atlas instead of the High Atlas pass, with stops in the Ziz Valley and Ifrane.

Can I take my big suitcase to Fes?

Yes. Large luggage stays in the van for all three days and arrives with you in Fes. For the camp night you only need a small bag.
