Two long driving days frame one evening in the dunes. Day 1 crosses the High Atlas and ends in a hotel, day 2 reaches Erg Chebbi in time for the sunset ride, day 3 starts at sunrise and ends in Marrakech or Fes in the evening. The listings disagree mostly on where the first night is, which shifts how much of the road is left for day 2.

Choose by the first night

First night near Kelaat M’Gouna

The town of the rose valley, before the Dades Gorge. Day 2 then passes Boumalne Dades and Tinghir on the way to the dunes.

First night in the Dades Valley

A hotel in the valley or in the gorge itself, a little further east along the road of the kasbahs.

The evening before

Most operators do not give a pickup time when you book. MOROCCO TRIP and MOROCCOFIRSTGATE send time and place by WhatsApp between 5 and 6 pm the evening before, Marrakech City Life from 6 pm, and MOROCCO TRIP needs a working WhatsApp number for it. Ando Travel collects at 7 am; if your riad is deep inside the medina, the driver waits at a meeting point a short walk away. Keep the phone on that evening.

Day 1, over the High Atlas

The road climbs to the Tizi n’Tichka pass in long bends, then drops to Ait Ben Haddou, the fortified village on the hill. A local guide waits there; on most listings that guide is not included and costs a small fee. Around Ouarzazate the shared tours pass the Atlas Studios; Ando Travel and MOROCCO TRIP stop for photos outside, and only MOROCCO TRIP’s private premium tour goes in. The afternoon follows the road of the kasbahs east to the first hotel. At MOROCCOFIRSTGATE that is the Hotel Rose Mgouna or a similar one, and the listing mentions a pool on days 1 and 2. A shorter taste of the same road, as far as Ait Ben Haddou and back in a day, is compared on our sister site Marrakech Escapes.

Day 2, gorge and dunes

The morning goes to Tinghir and the Todra Gorge, usually with a short walk through the palm oasis and between the rock walls. Some listings include the local guide here: MOROCCOFIRSTGATE and Sahara Desert Trip list one for the gorge. From the gorge the road runs through flat stony desert, past Erfoud on some tours, to the edge of Erg Chebbi near Merzouga. Luggage stays in the vehicle; you take a small bag for the night, ride into the dunes at sunset and reach the camp for dinner, Berber drumming and, on most listings, sandboarding. What goes in that bag is on what to pack.

Day 3, sunrise and the long road back

The day starts before dawn with the ride back out of the dunes, then breakfast and the drive. Round trips cross the High Atlas again and reach Marrakech around 8 pm, says MOROCCO TRIP, which does not guarantee the time and asks you to leave a buffer before any flight. Ando Travel gives the same hour. sahara for you warns of up to seven or eight hours in the vehicle per day. Tours that end in Fes turn north through the Ziz Valley and the Middle Atlas instead; see Marrakech to Fes via the desert. If day 3 sounds too long, the four-day tours split it.

The pass road is winding. Sahara Desert Trip and MOROCCOFIRSTGATE do not take guests over 70, several listings exclude pregnant women, and Marrakesh Travel Services lists people with back problems as unsuitable. If you get carsick, ask for a seat at the front when you board.

What travellers say about the road

Guests write about drivers who knew the mountain roads, regular stops and long days that were worth it. One reviewer asks for the pickup time to be confirmed earlier.

“Mehdi was the best guide we could have had for this trip. Despite it being tiring at times he always made it fun. This is a once in a lifetime trip that you have to take when in Morocco. The cost involves so many things and the daily spendings are mainly the lunch and waters. So worth it!”

“The activity was great, exception value for money and our guide, Hamid, was fantastic. The local guides at our stopping points were good too. My only feedback for improvement would be to have confirmation of pick up time sooner. We didn't know our pickup time until 8pm the night before.”

“Great excursion, I recommend it without a doubt. It is a lot of hours in the car, but it is worth it to see the different stops. Our driver Kamal belkhairi was excellent; he told us about everything we saw, gave us recommendations, and made sure we always felt comfortable in every way.”
