Many two-day listings from Marrakech carry “Sahara” in the title and end in the Zagora dunes, in the Draa Valley south of the High Atlas. The Erg Chebbi dunes at Merzouga lie much further east, past the Dades Valley and the Todra Gorge. Which one you book decides how many hours you spend in the van per night in the desert.

What the Zagora tours include

All three Zagora listings follow the same pattern: over the Tizi n’Tichka pass, a stop at Ait Ben Haddou, down the Draa Valley and a camel ride to the camp at sunset, back the next day after a sunrise ride. The details differ by listing. Ando Travel leaves at 7 am and is back in Marrakech around 6 pm on day 2. Marrakesh Travel Services lists a standard Berber camp with access to showers and toilets, and the entry to the Ait Ben Haddou kasbah is not included. sahara for you asks you to bring cash in dirhams for lunch, drinks and tips, because cards are not always accepted on the way.

Options and meals on the Zagora tours

On the sahara for you tour, “Luxury” in the title is one of the options; the first option is a private standard tent with a shared bathroom. The “Food” in Ando Travel’s Zagora safari “with Food” means dinner and breakfast in the camp. Lunch on the road is paid separately on all three.

Merzouga in two days

The 3t Travel listing is the shortcut. Its own description says the first day to the camp can take up to ten hours, with few long stops so the group arrives before sunset. The stops at Ait Ben Haddou and the Todra Gorge cost extra on this tour. The listing is not suitable for people prone to motion sickness. In exchange, every tent option has its own bathroom, and day 2 can end in Fes instead of Marrakech. Its cheapest option is transport only, without a night in the camp, so choose one of the tent options when you book.

When three days make sense

The three-day tours spend the first evening in a hotel around Kelaat M’Gouna, the Dades Valley or Tinghir, so day 1 is a drive with sightseeing stops rather than a transfer. You still get one night in the dunes; the extra day buys the route, not more time in the camp. Where each day goes is on our day-by-day itinerary. For the camp classes on these tours, see standard or luxury camp.

Erg Chigaga, beyond M’Hamid at the end of the Draa Valley, is the other large dune field in southern Morocco. None of the tours compared here go there. If you only have a single day, the stony Agafay plateau near Marrakech is a day trip on our sister site Marrakech Escapes; it is a landscape of hills and rock, not sand.

What travellers say about two days and three

Guests of the two-day trips praise drivers who kept to schedule, the camp teams near Zagora and a long drive that went by quickly; a three-day guest says a good guide made the long drive worthwhile. One reviewer finds Zagora far for a single evening in the dunes.

“A very nice little desert; our driver, Mustapha, was very professional. The camp was very nice; the sunrise and sunset were incredible. One important point is that it’s really far from Marrakech. A day to get there and a day to get back for just one evening on site… I recommend two nights; …”

FAQ

Is Zagora in the Sahara?

Zagora lies on the edge of the Sahara in the Draa Valley, and its dunes are smaller and more scattered than Erg Chebbi. The listings use “Sahara” for both. If the tall sand dunes are the point of your trip, pick a tour that names Merzouga or Erg Chebbi.

Can I see Erg Chebbi on a two-day tour?

Yes, with a very early start. The 3t Travel tour picks you up between five and six in the morning and says the drive to the camp can take up to ten hours. Stops at Ait Ben Haddou and the Todra Gorge cost extra on that tour.

Do Zagora camps have private bathrooms?

In the luxury option. Ando Travel and sahara for you both write that the standard camp has a shared bathroom and the luxury camp a private one. Marrakesh Travel Services lists access to showers and toilets in its standard camp.

Can a two-day desert tour end in Fes?

The 3t Travel tour to Merzouga has options that return to Fes on day 2. The Zagora tours compared here all return to Marrakech.
