On the Merzouga tours the camel is the way into the camp. The van stops at the edge of Erg Chebbi in the late afternoon, you hand over your big luggage, climb on and ride in a caravan to the tents in time for sunset. The next morning the caravan leaves before dawn, so you see the sun come up over the dunes from the saddle or from a ridge on the way. None of the listings gives the length of the ride.

Who should not ride

Several listings exclude pregnant women. Marrakesh Travel Services also lists people with back problems, and Sahara Desert Trip and MOROCCOFIRSTGATE do not take guests over 70; MOROCCOFIRSTGATE sets its lower limit at 12 years. Getting up and down is the awkward part: the camel rises back legs first, so lean back and hold on. If any of this applies to you, pick a listing with a 4x4 alternative and ask before you book, not at the edge of the dunes.

Without the camel

The 4x4 transfer is handled differently on each listing. MOROCCO TRIP includes “camel ride or 4x4 transfer” on its round trip and offers the 4x4 on request on its tour to Fes. Ando Travel offers it to luxury camp guests who ask a day ahead. sahara for you charges extra for it, and the Viator listing of Morocco Global Adventures names the 4x4 as an option. On the two-day trip by 3t Travel the camel ride “can be skipped”.

The animals

The animals are dromedaries, the one-humped camels of North Africa. The listings do not describe how they are kept or how many rides an animal does per day. If animal welfare matters to you, look at the animals and the saddles before you mount, and use the 4x4 alternative where a listing has one. Riding is not a condition for the night in the camp on the listings that offer the alternative.

Sandboarding and quads

Most listings include sandboarding at the camp; Sahara Desert Trip lists boards for hire in Merzouga instead, and 3t Travel offers it on request. Quads and buggies are an extra on most tours, hired on site from locals at Marrakech City Life. The premium options of sahara for you and of the MOROCCO TRIP tour to Fes include a quad ride, and so do the private premium options of Marrakech City Life. What to wear and carry for the ride is on what to pack.

What riders remember

Sunrise from the saddle, guides who made it fun and a first night under the desert stars come up again and again. One guest of a two-day trip found the time on the camels short.

“Youssef is a nice and helpful guide and a trip was quite well prepared. The desert was an amazing experience! Especially the sunrise and camel riding. :) Highly recommended!”
Paweł · Poland · September 2026 3-day Sahara tour with private tent · RED CITY TRANS
“Charaf was our guide and Said was our driver, they were both great and so friendly. The accommodation was lovely and the activities were great too. It was amazing to be on a camel in the desert. Charaf sorted out a birthday cake which was delicious, thank you!”
Lucy · United Kingdom · September 2026 3-day Merzouga with camel rides · Marrakesh Travel Services

“This was an unforgettable trip — my first time in Africa! We visited the Game of Thrones filming locations and explored the world’s largest desert. “Surprisingly very short time on the camels and in the actual dunes, that was somewhat disappointing. The food was really good, dinner especially. For breakfast, it would have been nice to have some sort of protein (I came across eggs a lot else-wear) It was mostly bread which is understandable, but …”

FAQ

Do I have to ride a camel to reach the desert camp?

Not on every listing. MOROCCO TRIP includes a 4x4 transfer as an alternative on its round trip and offers it on request on its tour to Fes; Ando Travel offers it to luxury camp guests who ask a day ahead; sahara for you charges extra.

How long is the camel ride in Merzouga?

The listings do not say. The ride takes you from the edge of the dunes to the camp at sunset and back at sunrise.

Can children ride a camel?

Most listings name no age limit. MOROCCOFIRSTGATE does not take children under 12. Ask the operator whether a child rides alone or with an adult.

What happens to my luggage during the camel ride?

It stays in the van. You carry a small backpack; Manzil Dades allows only a backpack on the camel.
